My mods to this date are 3" turbo-back exhaust, injen CAI, iON Performance FMIC, NGK BKR7E plugs(1 heat range colder and copper instead of platinum), Mobil 1 syn. It has nearly no lag at all, and now that mazda has fixed our PCM, it is very smooth and quick. It can't flow as much volume as a bigger turbo such a T3 or T03-T04 hybrid, but unless you are really going for some huge numbers (again probably requiring forged parts), the stock T25 is a sweet little turbo, and you won't need much more. The T25BB that comes with the car has been pushed to 21 psi on race gas yielding 263whp by joep in NY. It has been done without going forged, but I hope you can really, really tune a car to avoid detonation. I would be careful if you are going to run that kind of setup without getting some forged internals to handle it.
